Rammstein: Amerika video: Globalisation

  • I was afraid that this topic might be too difficult for teens as this is something that 20 year olds are more likely to be passionate about. However it worked really well and it wasn't too advanced for them at all.
  • I used this after the reading text from chapter one of Rising Star.

Elicit, which is the most dominant country in the world?

Then they brainstorm all the American elements in Spanish society, McDonalds etc.

Then they have to watch the music video it and write down all the American symbols that they see.

Focus on the chorus, why does he say "we are all living in America?"
Do you think it is positive or negative message in general?
No. why not? Because he says "this is not a love song".

Brainstorm the positive and negative aspects of globalisation.

Then we have a debate:

The local council has to decide whether to give planning permission for a new McDonalds or a family restaurant, both are interested in the same site.

So divide the class into 3 teams, McDonald's, family restaurant and the councillors.
Each thinks of reasons why their business would be better and the councillors think of arguments for and against both. Then McDonalds debates against the family business and the councillors judge and give their verdict.

The class really got into this and came up with some really valid points.

The next day I was accused of being a vegetarian hippie.
