Defining and Non Defining Relative Clauses
NEED IDEAS FOR PRODUCTIVE SKILLS
Used these two example sentences, got them to discuss in pairs what they thought was the difference in meaning:
My brother, who got married last year, is coming to visit me.
My brother who got married last year is coming to visit me.
1 Non Defining Clause
My brother, who got married last year, is coming to visit me.
The info between commas is EXTRA. It's not necessary information and could be omitted and the sentence would make sense.
2 Defining Relative Clause
I have more than one brother and I specify which one by saying that he got married last year.
I drew three men on the board with ????
Which brother is coming?
The one who got married last year.
____
Then we did these examples from Rising Star:
These shoes are the ones which I always wear to school
Reeboks, which are my favourite trainers, are very expensive
Defining Relative Clause
These shoes are the ones (which) I always wear to school
Subject = I
Object = Shoes
Verb = wear
which and be omitted or replaced with "that" informally, when the relative pronoun refers to the object.
Non Defining Relative Clause:
Reeboks, which are my favourite trainers, are very expensive
Relative Pronoun is necessary and cannot be replaced by "that".
EXERCISE
I got this idea from the British Council website:
I describe a student and they have to say which one it is:
The girl wearing purple shoes : Vicky
Then each student has to refer to someone and the rest have to say who it is.
DEFINITELY NEED MORE PRACTISE IN THIS. NEED IDEAS!!!

Timothy Evans Story - Crime Vocabulary
The Trial of Timothy Evans
Timothy John Evans (November 20, 1924 – March 9, 1950) was a young man, possibly mentally retarded, who was hanged in the United Kingdom in 1950 for the murder of his infant daughter. Events subsequent to his execution, including a book proclaiming his innocence and a pardon for his daughter’s murder, helped to get capital punishment abolished in Britain
Evans was a native of Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. On September 20, 1947, Timothy married Beryl Susanna Thorley. In Easter 1948, the couple moved to Notting Hill, London. Their daughter Geraldine was born in1948.
It was well known that Evans was prone to tell elaborate lies about himself – lies which tended to be a way of showing off to defend a rather fragile ego. He and Beryl were also known to have loud rows which could be heard by the neighbours. They had financial difficulties and at the end of 1949 Beryl announced that she was going to have another baby.
On 30 November 1949, Evans went to the police in Merthyr Tydfil and confessed to killing Beryl and disposing of her body down the drain outside the apartment building. He said that he had given his wife something contained in a bottle and that she died after ingesting it. He told the police that afterwards he had made arrangements to have his daughter Geraldine looked after, and had returned to Wales.
When police examined the drain outside the front of the building they found nothing and also found that the weight of the drain cover required the combined strength of three Police officers to lift it. When re-questioned, Evans told a different story. He now claimed that his neighbour and fellow tenant, John Reginald Halliday Christie, who was a doctor, had come to visit Beryl and when he arrived from work, Christie told him that she had died.
During a search of the house in Notting Hill the police found the bodies of the wife and child in the back area of the building. When Evans was asked whether he was responsible for their deaths, he replied with a simple “Yes.”
Evans went on trial at the Old Bailey in January 1950. The court heard evidence related to both killings, although Evans was officially charged only with the killing of his daughter. During the trial, he reverted to his story that his neighbour Christie was the actual killer. The jury found Evans guilty of his daughter’s murder and he was hanged on 9 March 1950.
Three years later, a new tenant in Christie's flat, Beresford Brown found the bodies of three women (Kathleen Maloney, Rita Nelson and Hectorina Maclennan) hidden in the kitchen cupboard. Christie was convicted and hanged in 1953 after confessing to having murdered Beryl Evans.

Gaudi’s Guell Park lizard vandalised
More bad news from Spain. The fabulous mosaic lizard/dragon/salamander at the entrance to the Parc Guell was vandalised on Tuesday evening this week. The damage was apparently done by 2 people, using an iron bar. Police would like to question two local students of English concerning the incident; -----------------and ------------------------------. More details from el Periodico (in Spanish) showing damage to the head…
The last time the sculpture was assaulted like this was probably when it was made. Gaudi reportedly kicked it to deform the metal armature into the shape he wanted…
Proceedure:
Students read the article:
Divide class into 10 students, 2 suspects (A and B) and 2 teams of 4 policemen(C and D) , make the suspects stronger and well-behaved students.
Students go outside and decide on their story while police decide on their interrogation questions.
C interrogates A while D interrogates B
D interrogates B while C interrogates B
A and B come together again and discuss what they were asked and when they said. Should be using reported questions and reported speech
e.g. "they asked me what I was wearing and I said that I was wearing a t-shirt."
Split and mix C and D, so that they can compare questions and answers given, also using reported speech.
e.g. I asked her what she was wearing and she said that she was wearing a T-Shirt.
Not sure if this is good for teens but they do seem to joke about Bush quite a lot so I'll give it a go.

3rd conditional - Upper Intermediate teens
Afterwards we watched the whole documentary "Touching the Void". Before beginning I realised that there were a lot of references to imperial measurements that were crucial to understanding so I got them to match the measurements while I tried to work out how the dvd player worked (!) There were comprehension questions to answer while they were doing it, the video is in sections; day 1 day 2 etc so I stopped and checked if they understood. They were really interested in the story, more than I expected, although the only vocabulary question I was asked was "what does c*nt mean?!" Cant blame the man for swearing, he crawled 4 days in the snow with a broken leg....
Match the metric to imperial measurements:
1 inch (length) 91 cm
1 foot (length) 2.54cm
1 yard (length) 1609 m
1 mile (length) 568 ml
1 pint (liquid) 453g
1 ounce (weight) 6.3 kg
1 pound (weight) 30cm
1 stone (weight) 28.35 g
I was checking the web for songs to use in teaching the 3rd conditional and I came across this one at http://www.ac-nancy-metz.fr/enseign/anglais/Henry/wish.htm#wsong
James Blunt Tears and Rain
How I wish I could surrender my soul;
Shed the clothes that become my skin;
See the liar that burns within my needing.
How I wish I'd chosen darkness from cold.
How I wish I had screamed out loud,
Instead I've found no meaning.
I guess it's time I run far, far away;
find comfort in pain,
All pleasure's the same:
it just keeps me from trouble.
Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray.
I've heard what they say,
but I'm not here for trouble.
It's more than just words:
it's just tears and rain.
How I wish I could walk through the doors of my mind;
Hold memory close at hand,
Help me understand the years.
How I wish I could choose between Heaven and Hell.
How I wish I would save my soul.
I'm so cold from fear.
I guess it's time I run far, far away;
find comfort in pain,
All pleasure's the same:
it just keeps me from trouble.
Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray.
I've heard what they say,
but I'm not here for trouble.
Far, far away; find comfort in pain.
All pleasure's the same:
it just keeps me from trouble.
It's more than just words:
it's just tears and rain.

First Conditional - Prisoner's Dilemma - Upper Intermediate
2 guys hold up a bank and they are both arrested by the police and interrogated separately.
You have to decide whether you will stay silent or betray the other prisoner. You don’t know what the other prisoner is going to say, so you have to take a risk.
There are 4 possible results shown in the table below. (on the worksheet it is on a grid, so it's clearer) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner
Prisoner A Stays Silent
Prisoner B Stays Silent
Each serves six months
Prisoner A Stays Silent
Prisoner B Betrays
Prisoner A serves ten years
Prisoner B goes free
Prisoner A Betrays
Prisoner B Stays Silent
Prisoner A goes free
Prisoner B serves ten years
Prisoner B Betrays
Prisoner A Betrays
Each serves five years
Give out the sheet, read it and explain that there are 4 outcomes.
Write on the board
If prisoner A stays silent and prisoner B betrays, prisoner A will go to prison for 10 years and prisoner B will go free.
Elicit and analyse form
Get the students to write 3 sentences for the 3 other outcomes.
Students in pairs represent one prisoner and decide what they are going to do. Assign which pair is going to play against which other pair. Get them to write their decision on a paper with their names on it and then collect them and read out the verdict.
They all chose to betray........

Rammstein: Amerika video: Globalisation
- I was afraid that this topic might be too difficult for teens as this is something that 20 year olds are more likely to be passionate about. However it worked really well and it wasn't too advanced for them at all.
- I used this after the reading text from chapter one of Rising Star.
Elicit, which is the most dominant country in the world?
Then they brainstorm all the American elements in Spanish society, McDonalds etc.
Then they have to watch the music video it and write down all the American symbols that they see.
Focus on the chorus, why does he say "we are all living in America?"
Do you think it is positive or negative message in general?
No. why not? Because he says "this is not a love song".
Brainstorm the positive and negative aspects of globalisation.
Then we have a debate:
The local council has to decide whether to give planning permission for a new McDonalds or a family restaurant, both are interested in the same site.
So divide the class into 3 teams, McDonald's, family restaurant and the councillors.
Each thinks of reasons why their business would be better and the councillors think of arguments for and against both. Then McDonalds debates against the family business and the councillors judge and give their verdict.
The class really got into this and came up with some really valid points.
The next day I was accused of being a vegetarian hippie.
Rising Star: A Pre-First Certificate Course
I have some comments...
Advantages
Good idea to get them prepared for first certificate.
Interesting topics: Cloning
Disadvantages
Not interesting topics:
Chapter 4. Eclipses. It doesn't really give way to debate and is not really thought provoking.
Chapter 1 "the Global Teenager" Is this an ad for Benneton clothes? Why is there a picture of teenagers of different races all wearing Benneton clothes in different colours and then it says that Benneton respects individualism......??? To paraphrase the text: teenagers around the globe, we all have so much in common. Why does the book only focus on the positive aspects of globalisation? I turned it into a debate on globalisation.
Layout:
It takes on 3 or 4 tenses all at once, this is really confusing for the students.
You have to teach the tenses separately first before moving on to the book, otherwise you get a row of puzzled faces and a bombardment of questions.
Teaching the tenses beforehand means coming up with your own materials... which I don't mind doing but I would like to be able to rely on my book sometimes as well.
A lot of the grammar questions that come up such as gap fills give a certain tense in the teacher's book, but there are various possibilites depending on the context and of course no context is given. So you end up telling three different students that their different answers are right and they all get confused and don't believe you any more. Or you end up checking the teacher's book to see which answer they had in mind and the students pipe up "you don't know the answer!".
Layout 2
It all seems to be in the wrong order. The questions that you would tend to use as a lead in, which usually involve personalisation tend to be exercise 4, after the reading text, as in the reading on the global teenager.
The vocabulary section at the end of the reading text comes too late also, the difficult words are correctly predicted but to deal with them at the very end after comprehension questions is pointless because you will already have explained them to help them understand.
Context
Sometimes the book is following a theme and then all of a sudden you get a random gap fill sentence that has nothing to with anything.
Directed at teens?
Published in 2000, chapter two talks about a range of science fiction films, most of which teens have never heard of. One is Bladerunner, there is also Star Trek, and a reading about Gillian Anderson from the X-files.
I am aware that at the time of writing and publishing the X-files was popular but not any more. Students had never heard of it.
Other films could have been used, Bladerunner is from way long ago, the students didn't know it and they were bored stiff. Star Wars.. ok. Star Trek... not really their cup of tea I must say.
Unless they could think of films that will always be popular with teenagers maybe the theme isn't the best one.
LISTENING
I did the listening from chapter 6 today. Questions 1 and 2 were the gist questions asking the students opinions about tattoos and then asking how they would react if their partner got a tattoo or a piercing. Then they had to listen to the tape and compare their answers with the person speaking's answers. It was a very long script and the questions weren't relevant to the script - so what happened? The students switched off.
Future Will for Predictions - Quick Idea
Do you believe in horoscopes?
What starsign are you?
What are the characteristics of your starsign?
Now give out a copy of their horoscope from a previous day.
They read it and talk about whether or not it came true.
Now ask what form is used for making predictions?
WILL + INFINITE
Now ask them to write a prediction for another starsign.
I was surprised how much the teens enjoyed doing this, out of twelve students, three of them put "you will die"...
The book I'm using then moves on to compare will with other future tenses. By Upper Intermediate level there is no problem with the form, this is just to refresh on of the cases when "will" is used. No need to spend more time on it.
Later there will be exercises where they have to choose the correct form, this is easy for them during an exercise but the real test is whether they will remember to use it in the long term.
_________________________________________________
As my book deals with the present continuous, going to and will for predictions I have included the next part of the lesson plan, but there could be different combinations of past tenses for camparison.
Present continuous
Ask the students to talk in pairs about what are their plans for the rest of the day. Put this on the board otherwise they won’t talk:
How are you getting home?
Who are you going to see?
What are you going to do the rest of the evening?
What time are you having dinner?
Highlight that we use the present continuous for definite plans and going to for intentions.
Give an example:
In August Im going to travel to Ireland
(but I don’t know exactly when and I havent bought my ticket yet)
In August Im spending a week in Asturias with some friends, we going camping.
(it’s a definite plan)
Brainstorm all the things you can do in BCN
Do the diary exercise:
Make a table with three columns DAY , ACTIVITY, WITH WHO
They have to make arrangements to meet a different person on each day and do a different activity.
If they are busy on that day they explain using the present continuous : "Sorry I can't, I'm going to the cinema with Juan..."
Feedback in o/c one or two, then talk in pairs about the plans they have made. Now move on to exercises where they have to choose either going to or present continuous.
Future Perfect Simple and Future Perfect Continuous Lead in and discussion
- Before embarking on the future perfect simple and the future perfect continuous, get them to revise the present perfect and the present perfect continuous. This not only gets them to revise the tense but also gets them thinking along the lines of how the world will change in the future which will be the task where they have to use the target grammar.
- I've made a worksheet and when I have time to work out how to put attachments on this thing I will include it, for the moment I will describe it.
- I've been working on this lesson plan for 3 hours now, after waking up from my nap that I took when I arrived home from work exhausted. One of my teen students told me: teaching is easy, you just have to photocopy ; )
- Worksheet: They will discuss these things in groups of three.
Discuss the items in the pictures and anything else you can think of that has changed, using the present perfect:
It has changed….
We have stopped ..ing ….
She has started wearing…
He/she/ithas become
(the pictures show an 80's television, an 80's mobile, computer, a picture of Madonna wearing a ridiculous hat and a group of friends in a bar. Next to it is a picture of a modern TV, mobile, PDA, Madonna now and a conversation on msn.)
- This is a teens class, maybe with adults we could include some political topics like the Cold War and compare it to the so-called "war against terrorism".
- With adults there are so many more possibilities as they have lived for at least 2 decades, teens are still a bit young to notice that the world is changing.
After this they should discuss the following questions:
2) How has your life changed in the last 10 years?
How has your style of clothes and hair changed in the last 10 years?
How has your relationship with your parents changed? Do you have more freedom now?
Has your personality changed?
How has your taste in music changed?
Do you still have the same friends as you did when you were 5 or has this changed?
What things haven’t changed? What things have you been doing since you were little?
How long have you been doing your hobbies? How long have you known your friends?
Divide the white board down the middle and feedback their answers onto the board on the left had side. Make sure that they are in neat lines so that later on the right, you can put their future predictions adjacently.
e.g. Mobile phones have become smaller.
e.g. I have been playing the guitar for 8 years.
___________________________________________
Moving on to the future. Before giving out these questions for discussion give a couple of examples, adjacent and corresponding to their ideas that you will have put on the board:
e.g. Mobile phones have become smaller. ---- By the year 2020 mobile phones will have become microscopic
e.g. I have been playing the guitar for 8 years. ------ By the year 2020 I will have been playing the guitar for 21 years.
- The problem with teaching this language is that we don't always use it in this context and it's hard to avoid being unnatural, for example I had written "mobile phones will be microscope, then changed it to will have become for the purpose of the exericse".
- This is language that isn't used very often so it's quite difficult to provoke conversation using it.
Now think about the year 2020.
How will technology have changed?
How will mobile phones/fashion/television/meeting friends have changed?
Imagine what new gadgets will have been invented.
Now think about your life in the future.
By what year will you have graduated from university?
What work experience will you have already had?
Things that you do now:
How long will you have been practising your favourite sports and hobbies?
How long will you have known your current best friend?
How long will you have been learning English?
What things do you think you will be still interested in?
What other things will you have been doing for a long time?
Now feedback the rest of their ideas onto the board on the right hand side.
If they don't use the form, convert it before you put it up.
Elicit the form from their examples.
WILL + have been + past participle
WILL + have been + - ing
Now move on to the exercises from the worksheet in my previous blog.
________________________________
Afterwards: these are four hour classes and they get tired.
What do you think are the best inventions of this decade? What are the features of these products i.e. why are they good?
In groups think of a brilliant invention that will have been created by the year 2020?
What is the name of your company?
The marketing department for this product wants to start advertising now.
Design a poster for your product, promising that by the year 2020 we will have invented "such and such " and all features that it will have. Draw pictures.
Future Perfect and Future Perfect Continuous Exercises.
This is really difficult to teach for the first time because you think you understand it until the students start asking questions. It also doesnt help when the rules in the book are general and the gap fill exercises they give are full or exceptions and it-depends-on-the-context type examples. Let that be a lesson to myself ... always know your material before you start using it otherwise you end up being bombarded with questions you can't answer... the only text books that I really can trust in without checking first are English File (layout is sometimes confusing) and Cutting Edge - the grammar analysis always leads them down the right path.
Future Perfect: Finished action in the future.
Will + have + past participle
e.g By November 2007 I will have had a baby. (the baby will be born in October)
Future Perfect Continuous: To talk about how long an action will have been in progress at a certain date in the future.
Will + have been + -ing
e.g. By July 2008 I will have been living here for 3 years.
e.g. By Thursday you will have been studying at Merit School for 9 days.

*Verbs that hardly ever form a continuous form:
abhor adore astonish believe desire detest dislike doubt forgive hate imagine impress intend know like love mean
mind perceive please prefer presuppose realize recall recognize regard satisfy suppose understand
We never say “will have been being” – we say “will have been” even if it will not be a finished action. e.g. I will have been on this planet for 28 years by my next birthday.
