Defining and Non Defining Relative Clauses

At this stage they should only have a brief introduction to this.
NEED IDEAS FOR PRODUCTIVE SKILLS

Used these two example sentences, got them to discuss in pairs what they thought was the difference in meaning:

My brother, who got married last year, is coming to visit me.

My brother who got married last year is coming to visit me.

1 Non Defining Clause
My brother, who got married last year, is coming to visit me.

The info between commas is EXTRA. It's not necessary information and could be omitted and the sentence would make sense.

2 Defining Relative Clause

I have more than one brother and I specify which one by saying that he got married last year.

I drew three men on the board with ????

Which brother is coming?
The one who got married last year.

____

Then we did these examples from Rising Star:

These shoes are the ones which I always wear to school

Reeboks, which are my favourite trainers, are very expensive

Defining Relative Clause

These shoes are the ones (which) I always wear to school

Subject = I
Object = Shoes
Verb = wear

which and be omitted or replaced with "that" informally, when the relative pronoun refers to the object.

Non Defining Relative Clause:

Reeboks, which are my favourite trainers, are very expensive

Relative Pronoun is necessary and cannot be replaced by "that".

EXERCISE

I got this idea from the British Council website:

I describe a student and they have to say which one it is:

The girl wearing purple shoes : Vicky

Then each student has to refer to someone and the rest have to say who it is.

DEFINITELY NEED MORE PRACTISE IN THIS. NEED IDEAS!!!

Timothy Evans Story - Crime Vocabulary

Adapted from wikiepedia

The Trial of Timothy Evans

Timothy John Evans (November 20, 1924March 9, 1950) was a young man, possibly mentally retarded, who was hanged in the United Kingdom in 1950 for the murder of his infant daughter. Events subsequent to his execution, including a book proclaiming his innocence and a pardon for his daughter’s murder, helped to get capital punishment abolished in Britain

Evans was a native of
Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. On September 20, 1947, Timothy married Beryl Susanna Thorley. In Easter 1948, the couple moved to Notting Hill, London. Their daughter Geraldine was born in1948.

It was well known that Evans was prone to tell elaborate lies about himself – lies which tended to be a way of showing off to defend a rather fragile ego. He and Beryl were also known to have loud rows which could be heard by the neighbours. They had financial difficulties and at the end of 1949 Beryl announced that she was going to have another baby.

On
30 November 1949, Evans went to the police in Merthyr Tydfil and confessed to killing Beryl and disposing of her body down the drain outside the apartment building. He said that he had given his wife something contained in a bottle and that she died after ingesting it. He told the police that afterwards he had made arrangements to have his daughter Geraldine looked after, and had returned to Wales.

When police examined the drain outside the front of the building they found nothing and also found that the weight of the drain cover required the combined strength of three Police officers to lift it. When re-questioned, Evans told a different story. He now claimed that his neighbour and fellow tenant,
John Reginald Halliday Christie, who was a doctor, had come to visit Beryl and when he arrived from work, Christie told him that she had died.

During a search of the house in Notting Hill the police found the bodies of the wife and child in the back area of the building. When Evans was asked whether he was responsible for their deaths, he replied with a simple “Yes.”

Evans went on trial at the Old Bailey in January 1950. The court heard evidence related to both killings, although Evans was officially charged only with the killing of his daughter. During the trial, he reverted to his story that his neighbour Christie was the actual killer. The jury found Evans guilty of his daughter’s murder and he was hanged on
9 March 1950.

Three years later, a new tenant in Christie's flat, Beresford Brown found the bodies of three women (Kathleen Maloney, Rita Nelson and Hectorina Maclennan) hidden in the kitchen cupboard. Christie was convicted and hanged in 1953 after confessing to having murdered Beryl Evans.

The Lenny Kravitz song, there's potential to turn it into an exercise to put the verbs in the right tense....

Lenny Kravitz My Mama Said
My mama saidThat your life is a gift
And my mama saidThere's much weight you will lift
And my mama saidLeave those bad boys alone
And my mama saidBe home before the dawn
And my mama saidYou can be rich or poor
But my mama saidYou can be big or small

But I'm always on the run

My mama saidThat it's good to be fruitful
But my mama saidDon't take more than a mouthful
And my mama saidThat it's good to be natural
And my mama saidThat it's good to be factual

But I'm always on the run

My mama saidBaby don't ride that crazy horse
And my mama saidYou must push with much force
And my mama saidGo get all that you're after
And my mama saidThat love's all that matters

But I'm always on the run

Ive decided to go with this one:

The Killers Somebody told me

Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this

Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this

Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend

I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try

ALIBI - SIMULATION OF A POLICE INTERROGATION WITH DISCUSSION AT THE END ABOUT WHAT WAS SAID IN ORDER TO FIND OUT IF SOMEONE WAS LYING.

Copy and paste the below article inserting 2 student's names into the spaces.

Gaudi’s Guell Park lizard vandalised
More bad news from Spain. The fabulous mosaic lizard/dragon/salamander at the entrance to the
Parc Guell was vandalised on Tuesday evening this week. The damage was apparently done by 2 people, using an iron bar. Police would like to question two local students of English concerning the incident; -----------------and ------------------------------. More details from el Periodico (in Spanish) showing damage to the head…
The last time the sculpture was assaulted like this was probably when it was made. Gaudi reportedly kicked it to deform the metal armature into the shape he wanted…

Proceedure:

Students read the article:

Divide class into 10 students, 2 suspects (A and B) and 2 teams of 4 policemen(C and D) , make the suspects stronger and well-behaved students.

Students go outside and decide on their story while police decide on their interrogation questions.

C interrogates A while D interrogates B
D interrogates B while C interrogates B

A and B come together again and discuss what they were asked and when they said. Should be using reported questions and reported speech

e.g. "they asked me what I was wearing and I said that I was wearing a t-shirt."

Split and mix C and D, so that they can compare questions and answers given, also using reported speech.

e.g. I asked her what she was wearing and she said that she was wearing a T-Shirt.

b) Life in America
c) Public relations
d) Being the president of the USA

2. "Yes, Peter. Are you going to ask that question with sunglasses on?... I'm interested in the sunglasses look, seriously.... For the viewers, there’s no sun." (Bush making fun of partially blind reporter Peter Wallsten, June 14, 2006)

3. "I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound largemouth bass in my lake." (Bush describing the highlight of his time in office to a German interviewer, May 7, 2006)

4. "The point now is how do we work together to achieve important goals. And one such goal is a democracy in Germany." (Bush in Washington, D.C., May 5, 2006)

10. "You never know what your history is going to be like until long after you're gone." (Bush in Washington, D.C., May 5, 2006)

Choose three Bushisms and re-write them as reported speech:

Example: Bush asked the divorced mother of three if she worked three jobs. He said that it was fantastic that she was doing that.

The New Cutting Edge Intermediate resource pack has an exercise called survivor that I might try out as well.

The Cutting Edge Intermediate chapter on reported speech made it very clear, there was a story about twins separated at birth and how they were reunited.

3rd conditional - Upper Intermediate teens

We have been covering the 3rd conditional using English File Upper Intermediate chapter 3B which was a good introduction to the form. It worked well because the story is interesting and on each question I took a class vote on what they would have done if it had been them.

Afterwards we watched the whole documentary "Touching the Void". Before beginning I realised that there were a lot of references to imperial measurements that were crucial to understanding so I got them to match the measurements while I tried to work out how the dvd player worked (!) There were comprehension questions to answer while they were doing it, the video is in sections; day 1 day 2 etc so I stopped and checked if they understood. They were really interested in the story, more than I expected, although the only vocabulary question I was asked was "what does c*nt mean?!" Cant blame the man for swearing, he crawled 4 days in the snow with a broken leg....

Match the metric to imperial measurements:

1 inch (length) 91 cm
1 foot (length) 2.54cm
1 yard (length) 1609 m
1 mile (length) 568 ml
1 pint (liquid) 453g
1 ounce (weight) 6.3 kg
1 pound (weight) 30cm
1 stone (weight) 28.35 g

I was checking the web for songs to use in teaching the 3rd conditional and I came across this one at http://www.ac-nancy-metz.fr/enseign/anglais/Henry/wish.htm#wsong

James Blunt Tears and Rain

How I wish I could surrender my soul;
Shed the clothes that become my skin;
See the liar that burns within my needing.
How I wish I'd chosen darkness from cold.
How I wish I had screamed out loud,
Instead I've found no meaning.

I guess it's time I run far, far away;
find comfort in pain,
All pleasure's the same:
it just keeps me from trouble.
Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray.
I've heard what they say,
but I'm not here for trouble.
It's more than just words:
it's just tears and rain.

How I wish I could walk through the doors of my mind;
Hold memory close at hand,
Help me understand the years.
How I wish I could choose between Heaven and Hell.
How I wish I would save my soul
.
I'm so cold from fear.

I guess it's time I run far, far away;
find comfort in pain,
All pleasure's the same:
it just keeps me from trouble.
Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray.
I've heard what they say,
but I'm not here for trouble.
Far, far away; find comfort in pain.
All pleasure's the same:
it just keeps me from trouble.
It's more than just words:
it's just tears and rain.
